Most folks don’t realize it, but the Toyota pickup truck is the most recognizable vehicle in the Toyota line. It was originally called the Stout. The Stout was introduced to the US market in 1964 as a 4X2 truck. The Hi-Lux made its debut in 1969 as plain pickup 4X2 pickup with a 1.9 litre 4 cylinder engine. It had a metal dashboard and a single front seat since most pickup trucks were used as utility vehicles in those days.
In 1972 Toyota re-engineered the engine and gave the truck a car-like appearance. The company promoted it as a strong, reliable, and low cost vehicle to operate. By 1973 the combination of a car-like ride and a 7.5 foot long bed made the Hi-Lux a strong competitor in the US truck market. Pickup, Van, and 4WD Magazine gave the Hi-Lux the title “Pickup Truck of the Year” in 1974. In 1975 the 3rd generation Hi-Lux was introduced. It was powered by a 2.2 Litre 4 cylinder engine and a 5-speed manual transmission. By 1977 Toyota had manufactured over one million pickup trucks in Japan.
A 4X4 model Toyota pickup was not introduced until 1979, but it wasted no time in terms of attracting a loyal following. The 1979 model was Toyota’s biggest pickup model. It had some of the luxury features that made their cars so popular. Off-road enthusiasts fell in love with the truck since aftermarket suspension and body lift kits were available to individualize the trucks.
Toyota was awarded the “4WD of the Year” award and the “Toughest Truck of the Year” in 1979. Throughout the 1980s Toyota 4X4 pickups were known as the dependable trucks with the one touch tailgate and the 2.4 Litre 4-cylinder gasoline engine with a 5-speed manual transmission.
Toyota started building their pickup trucks in California in 1995, but that move didn’t phase the popularity of the truck. The Tacoma, the Tacoma Double Cab, the S-Runner, and the SideStep have become used 4X4 trucks to reckon with in this age of versatile trucks. Toyota 4X4 used trucks rank in the top five in terms of consumer popularity.
