There are some jobs that you just can't contemplate without a heavy duty truck, such as towing a D9 bulldozer or your houseboat. For tasks requiring absolute muscle, the F350 Super Duty from Ford has been, and remains the go-to ride. Ford dominates domestic truck sales, and the quality of their 2009 F350 4X4 amply demonstrates why.
The 09 F350 comes in a plethora of cab styles, bed lengths, and trims. The regular cab has the standard two doors with rear bench seat, the Super Cab has the usual two small rear opening doors, while Crew Cabs boast four full doors for the ultimate in ease of entrance and exit. Super Cabs and Crew Cabs can be had with either an 8 foot or 6.75 foot bed, while the regular cab is available with the long bed only. The multiple variations can be configured as a dually, and four wheel drive is available on all variants. The four trims offered in ascending order are the XL, XLT, the FX4, specifically designed for off-road work, and the plush Lariat. In the F350 2009 model, only the XL and XLT may be had with the regular cab.
The base XL F350 09 model boasts such basic necessities as air-conditioning, an AM/FM radio, basic vinyl interior, 17 inch wheels, and manual trailer towing mirrors. Moving up to the XLT trim adds an integral trailer brake control, powered and heated mirrors, chrome finished wheels, cloth upholstery, a CD player, and fully powered accessories.
The FX4 incorporates many features specifically aimed at boosting off-road utility, such as extra stout shock absorbers, skid plates, and a limited slip rear axle, and is available in four wheel drive only. It also adds such creature comforts as bucket seats in the front, a powered driver's seat, telescoping and folding mirrors, and satellite radio. The Lariat edition comes with 18 inch alloy wheels, leather upholstery, powered and heated front seats, dual zone climate control, and the Sync voice control system. Other available options include a back up camera, sun roof, and entertainment systems for rear seat passengers, a favorite of those who will sometimes be using their 350 as a family hauler.
Power for the 09 F350 4X4 starts big with the standard 5.4 liter gas V8 that generates 300 horsepower and 365 foot-pounds of torque, and only increases with the option of either a 6.8 liter V10 that produces 362 horsepower and 457 foot-pounds, or the muscular 6.4 liter Powerstroke turbodiesel V8 that churns out 350 horsepower and 650 foot-pounds. All engines can be had with a six speed manual or five speed automatic tranny, and the choice of 2 or 4 wheel drive. In the right configuration, an 2009 F350 truck can haul 5,700 pounds in the bed and tow 15,000 pounds, without a fifth-wheel.
The interior is comfortable, quiet for a truck of this power and size, and made from high quality materials. Dual side pockets on the doors and a center console big enough to swallow a laptop provide plenty of interior storage.
