The 1999 F350 4X4: America's Beast of Burden

Reliability is the watchword when it comes to Ford trucks. Their penchant for continuing to run problem free for 100,000 miles and beyond is a huge selling point, and a major reason Ford remains so dominant in U.S. truck sales. The 1999 F350 Super Duty is built on this philosophy of simple reliability, on a scaled up frame meant to handle the really heavy jobs that are just a little too much for a regular F150.

Body Styles, Trims, and Features

The 99 F350  truck comes with a plethora of options for cab design, engine size, wheel and axle configuration, and other features that virtually guarantees there is a Super Duty variant for everyone. Three cab styles are available, the normal two door Regular cab, the extended Super Cab featuring two rear swinging doors for access to the aft seating, and the capacious Crew Cab, whose four full sized doors maximize convenience for entrance and egress from the back seats.

The F350 99 model is offered in 3 levels of trim, base XL, midlevel XLT, and the top of the line Lariat. The XL is a simple, no-frills work machine, offering bench seating, vinyl upholstery, manually operated windows, mirrors and locks, and a simple AM/FM radio. Moving up to the XLT ups the comfort ante considerably by adding air conditioning as a standard feature, as well as cloth upholstery, front split bench seating, and a radio with a casette player. The plush Lariat comes with such luxuries as powered windows, locks, and doors, a chrome step bumper, trip computer, and overhead console as standard, with such things as leather interior and keyless entry system as available options.

Under the Hood

Power for the F350 1999 model comes from three different motors, two gasoline and one diesel burning. The standard powerplant across all trim levels is a 5.4 liter Triton V8 that makes 235 horsepower amd 335 foot pounds of torque. Maximum horsepower can be gained by installing the options 6.8 liter Triton V10, which puts 275 ponies on the road. The best choice for those doing really serious hauling and towing with their Super Duty however, is no bout the tried and true 7.3 liter PowerStroke turbocharged diesel V8, which makes 235 horsepower and puts out a whopping 500 foot pounds of torque, for maximum low end get up and go. A five speed manual transmission is the standard powertrain with all three engines, with a four speed automatic as an available option.

Interior and Driving Impressions

There is plenty of room in the cab of the 1999 F350 Super Duty, and hauling five or six adults should prove to be no hassle when required. There is also plenty of practical storage, thanks to massive side pockets on the doors and a utility bin large enough to stow a laptop computer. You will never feel like you are driving a car while at the helm of a Super Duty, but the modern power steering sytem makes for easy fingertip course corrections.
