Back when trucks were used just for farming, GM had a truck plan that didn’t sound that great, but the results were over-the-top in terms of sales and profit.
Back in the 1960s the C/K truck was Chevy’s entry in the growing truck market, but when sales increased thanks to a trim package called the Silverado, GM knew it had a goose that laid golden truck eggs. Not to be outdone by the Chevy division GMC introduced the Sierra, which was an almost exact clone of the Silverado.
The Sierra was meant to be a higher priced Silverado, because it had more features, but most consumers who were price conscious felt the Sierra was a vehicle that just lined GM pockets with more dollars. Most of those early models sold like MacDonald burgers so all the fuss and conversation about the Sierra 2500 4X4 being a knock-off was just that—Talk.
In 1981 the Sierra got a complete make-over and it did become the dressed-up version of the Silverado. The engine choices were all gasoline. The 4.1 litre V6, 5.7 litre V8, 5.0 litre V8, and 7.4 litre V8 were all popular. The most popular engine was the 5.0 litre V8 with a compression ratio of 9.2:1, which was the highest compression engine ratio in over ten years. The engine was a four barrel carburetor, electronic spark control beauty that increased performance as well as fuel economy.
GMC put some real interior guts into the Sierra 2500. Cut-pile carpet, wood grain and aluminum door appliqués, insulated door panels and headliner, and a deluxe instrument panel, put the Sierra ahead of the Silverado in terms of getting more for the dollar spent.
The Sierra was designed to be light as well as aerodynamic so the fuel economy increased, plus the autolocking hubcaps on the 4X4 made it easy to move from 2 to 4 wheel drive. The deluxe chrome grille and molding package put the Sierra on a buy-me now platform when truck buyers measured the Sierra against other 3/4 ton truck models.
